These two examples are probably the most widely used and most useful of all planes. In addition, these examples come in a hinged wooden storage case. The No.4 Smoothing Plane: as the name implies, is designed for smoothing and final finishing. However its size makes it a very manageable tool for all manner of general planing tasks. It has a grey cast iron body for strength and stability. The base and sides are ground flat and square. The lever cap has a brass locking screw, enabling easy release for sharpening the blade. The plane features both depth and lateral blade adjustment. A wooden handle and tote complete the No.4. Blade width: 50mm; overall length: 254mm. The 60.1/2 Block Plane: has its blade seated at a low angle (13.5°) making it perfect for trimming end grain or plastic laminates. With a well honed blade it performs equally well on hard or soft woods planing with the grain. Size wise, the 60.1/2 is easy to use single handed. The mouth can be adjusted for fine or coarse work. Blade width: 35mm: overall length: 160mm. Note: Faithfull planes represent excellent value for money. As such they may not be quite as refined as more expensive examples. A little work sharpening the blade and maybe some minor fettling will be most rewarding.
